Vaginal Prolapse
What is Vaginal Prolapse
Vaginal prolapse happens when the walls of the vagina become weak and lose support, causing them to bulge or descend.
Sometimes, this occurs after hysterectomy (uterus removal), or due to weak pelvic floor muscles, and can involve the front wall (anterior), back wall (posterior), or the top of the vagina.
Causes / Risk Factors
- Childbirth trauma (especially multiple or difficult vaginal deliveries).
- Hysterectomy (removal of uterus leading to loss of pelvic support).
- Menopause (low estrogen → tissue weakness).
- Chronic constipation and straining.
- Chronic cough or lung disease.
- Obesity (extra abdominal pressure).
- Aging and natural tissue weakening.
Symptoms
- Feeling of a lump or bulge inside the vagina.
- Heaviness or dragging pain in the pelvic area.
- Difficulty passing urine or frequent UTIs.
- Incomplete bowel emptying or constipation.
- Discomfort during sexual intercourse.
- In advanced stages – bulge seen or felt outside the vaginal opening.
Types of Vaginal Prolapse
- Anterior vaginal prolapse (Cystocele): bladder bulges into the vagina.
- Posterior vaginal prolapse (Rectocele): rectum bulges into the vagina.
- Apical prolapse (Vaginal vault prolapse): top of vagina sags downward (common after hysterectomy).
Complications
- Recurrent urinary or bowel problems.
- Vaginal ulcers or infection (if prolapse protrudes).
- Worsening pelvic weakness if untreated.
Homeopathic Perspective
Homeopathy works by strengthening pelvic tissues, balancing hormones, and improving overall vitality.
Surgery may be avoided in many mild to moderate cases.
- Important Remedies for Vaginal Prolapse:
- Sepia – bearing-down sensation, feels better by sitting cross-legged or pressing the vulva.
- Lilium tigrinum – constant urge to support pelvic organs, heaviness, irritability.
- Murex – prolapse with increased sensitivity and sexual desire.
- Stannum metallicum – extreme weakness with prolapse, worse from exertion.
- Nux vomica – prolapse with constipation and sedentary habits.
(Remedy chosen after case-taking, not self-prescribed.)
Lifestyle & Management
- Do Kegel exercises daily to strengthen pelvic muscles.
- Maintain healthy body weight.
- Avoid chronic constipation (fiber-rich diet, hydration).
- Avoid heavy lifting.
- Take care post-delivery and post-hysterectomy with proper rest and exercises.
- Quit smoking to prevent chronic cough and pelvic strain.
With homeopathic treatment + lifestyle correction, vaginal prolapse can be controlled, symptoms relieved, and further worsening prevented.
