Uterine Prolapse

What is Uterine Prolapse

Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus descends from its normal position into the vaginal canal due to weakening of pelvic floor muscles and ligaments.
It can range from mild (slight descent) to severe (uterus protruding outside the vaginal opening).

Causes / Risk Factors

  • Multiple pregnancies and vaginal deliveries.
  • Difficult labor or delivery of a large baby.
  • Menopause (low estrogen weakens pelvic tissues).
  • Chronic constipation or straining.
  • Chronic cough (as in asthma, bronchitis, smokers).
  • Obesity (extra pressure on pelvic muscles).
  • Heavy lifting jobs or activities.
  • Genetic weakness of connective tissue.

Symptoms

  • Sensation of a lump or heaviness in the vagina.
  • Dragging pain in lower abdomen or back.
  • Difficulty in urination or incomplete bladder emptying.
  • Frequent urinary infections.
  • Constipation or difficulty passing stool.
  • Painful or uncomfortable sexual intercourse.
  • In severe cases – uterus visibly protrudes outside the vagina.

Degrees of Prolapse

1. First degree – uterus descends slightly into vagina.

2. Second degree – uterus reaches the vaginal opening.

3. Third degree – uterus protrudes outside the vaginal opening.

Complications

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Ulceration and infection of exposed uterus/vaginal walls.
  • Worsening of prolapse if untreated.

Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopathy strengthens pelvic muscles, relieves pain, and improves hormonal balance without surgery in early to moderate prolapse.

Common Homeopathic Remedies for Uterine Prolapse:

  • Sepia – most important remedy, bearing-down sensation as if everything would fall out, better by crossing legs.
  • Murex – prolapse with strong sexual desire, pelvic congestion.
  • Lilium tigrinum – feeling of heaviness in pelvic organs, constant urge to support uterus.
  • Stannum metallicum – extreme weakness, prolapse worse from least exertion.
  • Nux vomica – prolapse from chronic constipation, sedentary lifestyle.

(Remedy is chosen after detailed case-taking.)

Lifestyle & Management

  • Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises – strengthen pelvic muscles.
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights.
  • Maintain healthy weight.
  • Treat constipation – eat fiber-rich foods, hydrate well.
  • Postnatal care – rest and exercises after childbirth to prevent prolapse.
  • Avoid prolonged standing.

With proper homeopathic treatment + lifestyle correction, early stages of prolapse can be effectively managed and progression can be prevented.
