Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body’s defense system (immune system) mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints. This causes chronic inflammation, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and sometimes permanent joint damage if not managed properly. Unlike osteoarthritis (which is wear-and-tear), RA can affect multiple joints symmetrically (both sides of the body, like both hands or both knees).
Causes
The exact cause is not fully known, but factors that contribute include:
- Autoimmune reaction – the immune system attacks its own joint tissues
- Genetics – family history may increase risk
- Hormonal imbalance (more common in women, especially between 30–50 years)
- Environmental triggers – infections, smoking, stress
- Lifestyle – lack of physical activity, poor diet may worsen condition
Symptoms
- Joint pain, swelling, and warmth (often in small joints like fingers, wrists, ankles)
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
- Fatigue, weakness, and low-grade fever
- Symmetrical involvement (both sides affected equally)
- Over time: joint deformities, reduced mobility, and nodules under the skin
Homeopathic Perspective
Homeopathy considers RA as a deep-seated constitutional disorder, so treatment focuses on improving the immune balance, reducing inflammation, and slowing progression. Remedies are chosen individually, based on symptoms and personality. Commonly indicated medicines include:
- Rhus toxicodendron – stiffness and pain worse after rest, better by movement
- Bryonia alba – intense pain worsened by slightest movement, better with rest
- Causticum – joint pain with contractures, deformities, and weakness
- Kali carbonicum – swelling and pain, especially in the back and large joints
- Pulsatilla – shifting joint pains, worse in heat, better in cool air
(Note: RA usually needs long-term individualized treatment by a qualified homeopath.)
Precautions & Lifestyle
- Exercise gently – yoga, stretching, and physiotherapy keep joints flexible
- Balanced diet – anti-inflammatory foods (omega-3 rich like flax seeds, fish oil, walnuts), fresh fruits, vegetables
- Avoid smoking & alcohol – they worsen autoimmune inflammation
- Protect joints – avoid lifting heavy weights or repetitive strain
- Stay warm – cold weather can worsen stiffness
- Manage stress – meditation, deep breathing, and adequate sleep support immunity
