Pyelonephritis (Kidney Infection)

What is Pyelonephritis

Pyelonephritis means infection of the kidneys, usually spreading upward from the bladder (after cystitis/UTI).
It is a more serious form of UTI compared to simple bladder infection.
If untreated, it may damage the kidneys.

Causes

  • Bacterial infection (commonly E. coli from intestines).
  • Untreated cystitis or recurrent bladder infection.
  • Kidney stones blocking urine flow.
  • Enlarged prostate in men, preventing bladder emptying.
  • Pregnancy (increases risk due to pressure on urinary tract).
  • Catheters or medical instruments.
  • Weak immunity (diabetes, chronic illness).

Symptoms

High fever with chills.

  • Pain in back, side, or flank (near the waist).
  • Burning urination and frequency (like cystitis, but more severe).
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Cloudy, foul-smelling, or bloody urine.
  • Feeling of tiredness, weakness.
  • In children/elderly → may show only fever, irritability, or confusion.

Complications

  • Permanent kidney damage.
  • Kidney abscess.
  • Sepsis (infection spreading to blood).
  • High blood pressure due to kidney damage.

Conventional Treatment

  • Antibiotics (oral or IV in hospital for severe cases).
  • Pain relievers, fluids, bed rest.
  • Hospital admission in complicated cases.

Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopathy can be used in mild or moderate cases and as a supportive treatment in severe infections (along with urgent medical care).

Common Remedies (selected by symptoms):

  • Cantharis – severe burning and cutting pains during urination, frequent urge.
  • Terebinthina – burning in kidneys, urine dark and bloody.
  • Mercurius Corrosivus – intense pain, frequent urging, pus or blood in urine.
  • Apis Mellifica – stinging pains, swelling, scanty urine, better from cold.
  • Berberis Vulgaris – sharp, radiating pains from kidney to bladder or thighs.
  • Echinacea – helpful in septic states, when infection is spreading.

Individual case study is important in homeopathy to avoid recurrence and strengthen kidneys.

Precautions

Treat bladder infections early to prevent spread.

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Do not ignore fever or back pain with urinary complaints.
  • Maintain urinary hygiene (front-to-back cleaning, cotton underwear).
  • Avoid alcohol and spicy foods during infection.
  • For those with stones or enlarged prostate, regular checkups are necessary.

Summary

Pyelonephritis = kidney infection, serious than cystitis.
Main symptoms: fever, back pain, burning urination, nausea, cloudy/bloody urine.
Homeopathy helps reduce symptoms, prevent recurrences, and protect kidneys, but urgent care is required if high fever and severe pain are present.
