Menorrhagia
What is Menorrhagia
Menorrhagia means excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
- Periods may be heavier than normal (soaking through pads/tampons every 1–2 hours),
- or last more than 7 days.
- It can lead to anemia, weakness, and poor quality of life if untreated.
Causes
Functional / Hormonal causes:
- Anovulatory cycles (common in adolescents or perimenopausal women)
- Hormonal imbalance (estrogen-progesterone)
- Structural causes:
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometrial polyps
- Adenomyosis
- Endometrial hyperplasia
Other causes:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Intrauterine device (IUD) use
- Bleeding disorders (e.g., von Willebrand disease)
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Certain medications (anticoagulants, hormonal therapies)
Symptoms
- Very heavy bleeding (changing pads/tampons every 1–2 hours)
- Passage of large blood clots
- Periods lasting more than 7 days
- Fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath (due to anemia)
- Pelvic pain or pressure if fibroids present
- Emotional distress, poor concentration from chronic blood loss
Homeopathic Perspective
Homeopathy aims to regulate menstrual flow, strengthen uterine function, and improve general vitality.
Common remedies considered (based on symptoms):
- Sabina – profuse, bright red bleeding with clots, worse from slightest motion; pain extending to thighs
- Secale cornutum – dark, offensive, watery bleeding in thin, weak women; uterus feels relaxed
- China (Cinchona) – excessive bleeding with great weakness, faintness, ringing in ears; sensitive to touch
- Phosphorus – bright red bleeding, often in tall, lean women; worse from exertion; tendency to recurrent bleeding
- Calcarea carbonica – heavy, prolonged periods in women prone to obesity, chilliness, and fatigue
- Ferrum metallicum – bleeding with marked anemia, pale face, weakness
(Remedy choice depends on the individual case; self-prescription is not recommended.)
Precautions & Lifestyle
Track your cycles – note duration and flow intensity
- Iron-rich diet (green leafy vegetables, legumes, dates, jaggery, red meat if non-vegetarian)
- Avoid excessive tea, coffee, and processed foods (which may worsen bleeding)
- Hydration – drink plenty of water
- Yoga & mild exercise – improve pelvic circulation and hormone balance
- Medical evaluation is essential if bleeding is very heavy, sudden in onset, or associated with pelvic pain, to rule out fibroids, endometriosis, or cancer
With correct homeopathic treatment, menorrhagia can often be controlled, cycles regulated, and anemia prevented, especially when no serious pathology is present.
