What are Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are hard, stone-like deposits that form inside the kidneys when certain salts, minerals, and waste products get collected and crystallize.
In Homeopathy, kidney stones are seen as a result of disturbed metabolism and individual susceptibility (प्रवृत्ति), rather than just a local kidney issue.
Causes
- Constitutional weakness → Some people have a natural tendency to form stones.
- Suppressed diseases → e.g., skin eruptions or gout suppressed with strong medicines may shift disease inward.
- Faulty metabolism → Disturbance in uric acid or calcium metabolism.
- Dietary errors → Too much spicy, salty, oily, or less water intake.
- Sedentary lifestyle → Lack of proper activity and exercise.
- Emotional stress → Stress and mental strain can also affect metabolism in a susceptible person.
Symptoms
- Severe pain → Sudden, sharp, cramping pain in the back or side, radiating towards the abdomen or groin.
- Burning urination → Passing urine with burning or discomfort.
- Blood in urine (Hematuria) → Urine may look red, pink, or brown.
- Frequent urge to urinate → but only small amounts come out.
- Nausea & vomiting → due to intense pain.
- Restlessness → Patient keeps changing position but gets no relief.
In Homeopathy, the type of pain (cutting, shooting, stitching, radiating) and modalities (what makes it better or worse, e.g., lying still, movement, warm drinks) are very important for remedy selection.
Homeopathic Approach
Homeopathy treats the patient as a whole, not just the stone. The aim is to:
- Relieve pain & acute symptoms during stone passage.
- Dissolve or help expel stones naturally (if size permits).
- Prevent recurrence by treating the root constitutional tendency.
Commonly Used Remedies (Based on Symptoms):
- Berberis vulgaris → Cutting pain radiating to thighs/bladder, constant urge to urinate.
- Lycopodium → Red sandy deposit in urine, pain worse on right side, bloating.
- Sarsaparilla → Severe burning after urination, stones in bladder, urine passes in thin stream.
- Cantharis → Intense burning during urination, blood in urine.
- Hydrangea → Known as “stone breaker,” for gravel-like deposits and pain.
Note: Remedy should always be selected after case-taking, not just on stone presence.)
Precautions
- Drink sufficient water but avoid excess; balance is key.
- Avoid excess salt, spicy, oily food (as it aggravates metabolic imbalance).
- Take natural, simple diet → more fruits, vegetables, and light meals.
- Avoid suppression of natural urges → like urine or stool.
- Regular physical activity → walking, yoga, pranayama help maintain metabolism.
- Stress management → Homeopathy sees emotional health as strongly linked to physical health.
- Regular follow-ups → Stones may recur if constitutional treatment is not completed.
