Irregular Menstrual Cycles

What is Irregular Menstrual Cycles

An irregular cycle means that the time between two periods keeps changing, the flow is unpredictable, or periods may be missed altogether.

Normal menstrual cycle = 21 to 35 days.

If cycles are shorter, longer, skipped, or vary a lot → it’s considered irregular.

Causes

Hormonal imbalance:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism)
  • High prolactin levels

Lifestyle & functional causes:

  • Stress, anxiety, poor sleep
  • Excessive exercise or rapid weight loss
  • Obesity and sedentary lifestyle

Other medical causes:

  • erimenopause
  • Certain medications (contraceptives, steroids)
  • Diabetes or other metabolic disorders
  • Uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease

Symptoms

  • Periods coming too early or too late
  • Missing periods (amenorrhea) or frequent periods
  • Unpredictable flow – sometimes very light, sometimes very heavy
  • Spotting between periods
  • Associated complaints – mood swings, acne, weight changes, hair fall, infertility (in PCOS cases)

Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopathy helps by regulating hormonal balance, improving ovarian function, and restoring natural rhythm of cycles.

Common remedies (individualized):

  • Pulsatilla – cycles late, changeable flow, emotional sensitivity, often in gentle, mild-tempered women
  • Sepia – irregular periods with pelvic heaviness, bearing-down feeling, irritability, indifference to family
  • Lachesis – irregular, scanty or excessive bleeding, worse before periods; left-sided ovarian complaints
  • Sulphur – late or suppressed periods with heat, itching, and tendency to skin problems
  • Calcarea carbonica – early or prolonged bleeding in women who are overweight, chilly, and easily tired

(Selection always depends on the whole patient picture, not just irregularity.)

Precautions & Lifestyle

  • Maintain a healthy weight – both obesity and underweight disturb hormones
  • Balanced diet – include whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, and protein
  • Exercise regularly – yoga and moderate workouts improve cycle regularity
  • Stress management – meditation, deep breathing, enough sleep
  • Avoid excessive junk food, smoking, alcohol, and caffeine
  • Consult a doctor – if irregular cycles are persistent, very painful, or associated with infertility

With consistent homeopathic care and lifestyle support, many women experience restored regular cycles and improved hormonal health.
