Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) & Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG)

What are IGT & IFG

Both IGT and IFG are forms of Prediabetes, meaning your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. They are early warning signs that you may develop Type 2 Diabetes in the future.

Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG):

This happens when your fasting blood sugar (sugar level after not eating for at least 8 hours) is higher than normal but not yet diabetes.

Normal fasting sugar: <100 mg/dl

  • IFG range: 100–125 mg/dl
  • Diabetes: ≥126 mg/dl

Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT):

This happens when your post-meal sugar (sugar measured 2 hours after drinking glucose in an OGTT – Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) is high, but not in the diabetic range.

  • Normal 2-hour OGTT: <140 mg/dl
  • IGT range: 140–199 mg/dl
  • Diabetes: ≥200 mg/dl

Some people have only IFG, some have only IGT, and some may have both together.

Symptoms

  • Usually, IGT and IFG don’t cause symptoms.
  • They are often detected during routine health check-ups.
  • Some people may feel:
  • Fatigue
  • Mild excessive thirst
  • Slight weight gain around belly

Risk Factors

Complications if ignored

  • Progression to Type 2 Diabetes
  • Higher risk of heart disease & stroke even before full diabetes develops
  • Early damage to blood vessels

Homeopathic Approach to IGT & IFG

Homeopathy aims to:

  1. Improve sugar metabolism – regulate pancreas & insulin action.

2. Prevent progression – stop prediabetes from turning into full diabetes.

3. Treat associated symptoms – like fatigue, obesity, digestive issues.

Commonly used remedies (selected as per patient’s constitution):

  • Syzygium jambolanum – reduces frequent high sugar spikes.
  • Phosphoric acid – for weakness & mental fatigue from high sugar.
  • Lycopodium – for patients with belly fat, bloating, craving sweets.
  • Calcarea carbonica – obese individuals with sluggish metabolism.
  • Nux vomica – for lifestyle-related prediabetes (overwork, stress, irregular food).
  • Along with remedies, diet control, exercise, and regular sugar monitoring are crucial.
