Hepatitis A

What is Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV).
It usually spreads through contaminated food and water. Unlike some other hepatitis viruses, Hepatitis A does not cause chronic (long-term) liver damage, but it can make you quite sick for a few weeks to months.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Eating food or drinking water contaminated with the virus
  • Poor sanitation and hygiene
  • Eating raw/undercooked seafood (especially shellfish from dirty water)
  • Close contact with an infected person
  • Living in or traveling to areas with poor sewage and sanitation

Symptoms

Hepatitis A may start mild and sometimes feels like flu, then liver-related symptoms appear:

Early symptoms:

  • Fever, tiredness, loss of appetite
  • Nausea, vomiting, mild abdominal pain
  • Joint pains, headache

Liver-related symptoms:

  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Dark-colored urine (like cola)
  • Pale or clay-colored stools
  • Itching of skin
  • Enlarged liver (sometimes with tenderness)

Symptoms usually appear 2–6 weeks after infection. Most people recover completely in a few weeks to months.

Complications

Usually mild, but in rare cases can lead to acute liver failure, especially in older adults or those with pre-existing liver disease.

  • Does not cause chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis.

Homeopathy Perspective

In Homeopathy, treatment is individualized. Remedies are selected based on totality of symptoms (physical + emotional + general). Some commonly indicated remedies in Hepatitis A and jaundice are:

  • Chelidonium Majus – Pain under right shoulder blade, liver feels enlarged and sore, yellow skin, constant nausea, desire for hot drinks.
  • Carduus Marianus – Useful in liver enlargement, jaundice, bitter taste, vomiting of bile.
  • Nux Vomica – For patients with history of alcohol, spicy food, gastric troubles; irritable nature, nausea in morning.
  • Phosphorus – Jaundice with weakness, liver sensitive to touch, craving for cold drinks, fearfulness.
  • Mercurius Solubilis – Yellow skin, swollen liver, metallic taste in mouth, offensive sweat and saliva.

Note: Remedies must be prescribed after proper case-taking by a homeopathic doctor, not on self-medication.

General Precautions & Care

  • Take plenty of rest – liver needs time to heal.
  • Drink clean, boiled or filtered water only.
  • Eat a light, easily digestible diet – rice, dal, fruits, boiled vegetables.
  • Avoid oily, spicy, fried, and heavy foods.
  • Absolutely no alcohol or smoking.
  • Wash hands properly before eating.
  • Vaccination against Hepatitis A is available and helpful for prevention.

Summary

Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver due to a virus spread mainly through unsafe food and water. It shows up as fever, nausea, and jaundice but usually gets cured on its own with proper rest and diet. Homeopathy can help reduce symptoms, support faster recovery, and improve liver health naturally. Prevention is mostly hygiene and clean food/water.
