What is Cystitis
Cystitis means infection or inflammation of the bladder.
It usually happens when bacteria travel up from the urethra and infect the bladder lining.
Very common in women (because urethra is shorter), but men can also get it.
Causes
- Bacterial infection (most commonly E. coli).
- Unhygienic toilet use or improper wiping (back to front).
- Sexual activity (so-called “honeymoon cystitis” in women).
- Use of catheters.
- Incomplete emptying of bladder (due to obstruction, pregnancy, prostate enlargement in men).
- Weakened immunity (diabetes, chronic illness).
Symptoms
- Burning pain while urinating.
- Frequent urge to pass urine, even if bladder is nearly empty.
- Cloudy or foul-smelling urine.
- Blood in urine (hematuria).
- Pelvic pain or pressure in lower abdomen.
- Feeling of not fully emptying bladder.
- Sometimes mild fever and tiredness.
Complications
If not treated, cystitis may lead to:
- Kidney infection (pyelonephritis) – serious complication.
- Recurrent UTIs.
- Bladder damage (chronic cases).
Conventional Treatment
- Antibiotics (short course for simple cystitis).
- Pain relievers.
- Drinking lots of fluids.
Homeopathic Perspective
Homeopathy treats acute attacks and also prevents recurrence by boosting immunity.
Common Homeopathic Remedies (individualized):
- Cantharis – severe burning and cutting pain before, during, and after urination; constant urge but passes only a few drops.
- Apis Mellifica – stinging pain, urine scanty, bladder feels swollen, worse from heat.
- Sarsaparilla – intense burning at the end of urination.
- Staphysagria – cystitis after sexual activity or catheter use.
- Nux Vomica – frequent urge, small quantities, with cramping pains; suited to people with sedentary lifestyle, stimulants, alcohol.
- Pulsatilla – cystitis in mild, emotional patients; urine often thick, milky, or with mucus.
Remedy is selected on complete symptom picture, not just infection.
Precautions
- Drink 8–10 glasses of water daily.
- Urinate after intercourse to flush bacteria.
- Always wipe front to back.
- Wear cotton underwear, avoid tight clothing.
- Avoid spicy, acidic, and caffeinated drinks.
- Do not hold urine for long.
- For recurrent cases: strengthen immunity, maintain proper hygiene.
