Bacterial Vaginosis

What is Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection that happens when there is an imbalance of the natural bacteria in the vagina.
Normally, healthy bacteria (lactobacilli) keep the vagina slightly acidic and protect it from infections.
In BV, harmful bacteria grow more than normal, upsetting this balance.

It is not exactly a sexually transmitted disease (STD), but sexual activity can increase the risk.

Causes / Risk Factors

  • Reduction of protective lactobacilli and overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
  • Multiple or new sexual partners.
  • Douching (washing inside the vagina with soaps or chemicals).
  • Use of scented soaps, sprays, or deodorants in the vaginal area.
  • Weak immunity or hormonal imbalance.

Symptoms

  • Thin, grayish-white vaginal discharge.
  • Strong “fishy” odor, especially after intercourse.
  • Mild itching, irritation, or burning in the vaginal area.
  • Some women may have no symptoms at all.

Complications

  • Increased risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
  • Higher chance of preterm delivery or low birth weight in pregnancy.
  • Makes it easier to contract STIs (HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis).
  • Recurrent vaginal infections.

Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopathy looks at the root cause of recurrent BV – often linked to low immunity, hormonal imbalance, or lifestyle factors. The goal is to:

  • Restore natural balance of vaginal flora.
  • Relieve symptoms like discharge, odor, and irritation.
  • Reduce tendency of recurrence.

Common Homeopathic Remedies:

  • Sepia – yellow-green discharge, offensive smell, vaginal dryness, with pelvic heaviness.
  • Kreosotum – very offensive, acrid discharge causing burning and itching.
  • Borax – thick white discharge, worse before periods, with soreness.
  • Mercurius solubilis – thin discharge with fishy odor and burning, worse at night.
  • Pulsatilla – mild, creamy discharge, changeable symptoms, often linked with hormonal imbalance.

(Selection depends on full case history and constitution.)

Precautions & Lifestyle

  • Avoid douching and scented products in the vaginal area.
  • Wear cotton undergarments and avoid tight clothing.
  • Practice safe sex and maintain genital hygiene.
  • Keep blood sugar under control (important if diabetic).
  • Balanced diet, hydration, stress control, and proper sleep help prevent recurrences.

With a gentle homeopathic approach, BV can be treated effectively, discomfort can be reduced, and recurrence can be prevented by strengthening natural vaginal health.
