Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot)
What is Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot)
Tinea pedis, commonly known as Athlete’s Foot, is a fungal infection of the feet, especially affecting the spaces between the toes, soles, and sometimes the toenails.
It is caused by dermatophytes — most commonly Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum.
In homeopathic understanding, it reflects a disturbed vital force expressing itself through the skin — often a psoric or sycotic miasmatic manifestation — aggravated by dampness, perspiration, and suppressed eruptions.
Causes
- Wearing tight, closed shoes that trap moisture
- Excessive sweating of feet
- Walking barefoot in public showers, gyms, pools
- Poor foot hygiene
- Diabetes mellitus and weak immunity
- Sharing socks or footwear
Symptoms
- Itching, burning, and stinging between the toes
- Redness and scaling of skin on feet and soles
- Cracks or fissures, especially between 4th and 5th toes
- Peeling or white soggy skin due to moisture
- Offensive odor from infected feet
- In chronic cases — thickened, dry, scaly soles or spread to nails (onychomycosis)
Homeopathic Viewpoint
Homeopathy treats Tinea pedis by addressing both the external fungus and the internal susceptibility of the patient.
A constitutional remedy is chosen after studying the patient’s tendencies (e.g., sweating, hygiene, emotions, habits), not just the local infection.
