Alopecia Areata
What is Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, leading to well-defined, round or oval bald patches on the scalp, beard, or other parts of the body.
Causes / Risk Factors
- Autoimmune reaction against hair follicles
- Genetic predisposition
- Emotional stress or trauma
- Thyroid disorders, vitiligo, or other autoimmune diseases
- Nutritional deficiencies
Clinical Features:
- Sudden appearance of round/oval bald patches
- Scalp skin in affected area is smooth and without scarring
- “Exclamation mark” hairs (short broken hairs at margins)
- May involve eyebrows, eyelashes, or beard
- In some cases, nails show pitting or ridging
- Conventional Management:
- Corticosteroid creams or injections
- Immunotherapy or minoxidil
- Limited and temporary relief, relapses are common
Homeopathic Perspective
Homeopathy works very well in Alopecia Areata, as it addresses the root cause — the immune system imbalance.
Remedies not only help in regrowth of hair but also prevent recurrence of bald patches.
- It considers patient’s mental stress, genetic tendency, and overall constitution, which are usually ignored in conventional treatment.
Common Homeopathic Medicines:
- Fluoricum Acidum – Hair falls in spots, brittle hair, family history of baldness.
- Phosphorus – Bald patches with dandruff, hair falls in handfuls, sensitive scalp.
- Lycopodium – Premature baldness, especially on temples, associated with digestive troubles.
- Sepia – Hair loss after childbirth or due to hormonal imbalance.
- Graphites – Bald spots with itching, oozing eruptions, more in obese or chilly patients.
Prognosis
Very good, especially in children and young adults.
Hair regrowth is usually seen within weeks to months of correct remedy.
Prevents further spread and reduces relapses by correcting immune dysfunction.
