Uterine Fibroids (Leiomyomas)
What is Uterine Fibroids (Leiomyomas)
Fibroids (also called Leiomyomas or Myomas) are non-cancerous (benign) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus (womb).
They are very common in women of reproductive age (30–50 years).
Fibroids can be small like a seed or large like a melon, and sometimes multiple fibroids may grow together.
Types of Fibroids
- Intramural fibroids – grow within the uterine muscle wall.
- Submucosal fibroids – grow just beneath the inner lining (endometrium), can affect bleeding.
- Subserosal fibroids – grow on the outer surface of the uterus.
- Pedunculated fibroids – fibroids attached by a stalk (inside or outside uterus).
Causes
The exact cause is not known, but factors include:
- Hormones – Estrogen and progesterone promote fibroid growth.
- Genetics – Family history increases the risk.
- Early menstruation – starting periods at an early age.
- Obesity – higher body weight is linked to fibroid growth.
- Lifestyle factors – diet high in red meat and low in vegetables.
Symptoms
Many fibroids are silent (no symptoms), but when symptoms appear, they may include:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding (sometimes with clots).
- Prolonged periods.
- Pelvic pain or pressure.
- Frequent urination (if fibroid presses on bladder).
- Constipation (if pressing on bowel).
- Pain during intercourse.
- Abdominal swelling or bloating.
- Infertility or pregnancy complications in some cases.
Homeopathic Perspective
In homeopathy, fibroids are considered a result of hormonal imbalance, stress, and constitutional weakness.
Homeopathy aims to regulate hormones, shrink fibroid size, control bleeding, and relieve pain naturally.
Common Homeopathic Remedies for Fibroids:
- Sepia – uterine heaviness, bearing-down feeling, irregular menses, mood swings.
- Calcarea carbonica – profuse periods, obesity, chilliness, weakness, sweating.
- Lachesis – left-sided pelvic pain, intolerance to tight clothes, heavy bleeding.
- Thlaspi bursa pastoris – excessive menstrual bleeding with clots.
- China (Cinchona) – weakness and anemia from heavy blood loss.
- Phosphorus – long, heavy periods, sensitive and emotional constitution.
(The right remedy is chosen after full case analysis.)
Precautions & Lifestyle Support
- Balanced diet – more green vegetables, fruits, whole grains; less red meat and processed foods.
- Maintain healthy weight – obesity worsens fibroid growth.
- Stress management – yoga, meditation, breathing exercises.
- Stay active – regular exercise improves circulation and hormone balance.
- Monitor periods – keep track of bleeding patterns to detect changes early.
With constitutional homeopathic treatment, many women experience reduced bleeding, pain relief, better cycle regulation, and even shrinkage in fibroid size without surgery.
