Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS / PCOD)

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS / PCOD)

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) or PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Disease) is a common hormonal imbalance in women of reproductive age.

  • The ovaries produce higher levels of male hormones (androgens).
  • This leads to irregular or absent ovulation.
  • Small fluid-filled sacs (cysts) may form in the ovaries.
  • It often results in irregular cycles, weight gain, acne, hair growth, and fertility problems.

Causes

Exact cause is not fully understood, but main factors include:

  • Hormonal imbalance – excess androgens, disturbed estrogen and progesterone
  • Insulin resistance – body cannot use insulin properly, leading to high insulin and increased androgens
  • Genetics – runs in families
  • Lifestyle factors – poor diet, obesity, stress, lack of exercise

Symptoms

Irregular or absent periods

  • Excessive hair growth (face, chest, abdomen – called hirsutism)
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Weight gain, especially around the belly
  • Hair thinning or scalp hair loss
  • Difficulty in conceiving (infertility)
  • Dark patches on skin (neck, armpits – acanthosis nigricans)
  • Mood swings, anxiety, and low confidence due to appearance changes

Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopathy does not just target cysts but works on hormonal balance, insulin sensitivity, emotional well-being, and menstrual regularity.

Common remedies (selected individually):

  • Pulsatilla – delayed or irregular periods, mild and emotional women, often craving company
  • Sepia – irregular cycles with pelvic heaviness, irritability, indifference to family, tendency to weight gain
  • Calcarea carbonica – obesity, profuse periods, easy fatigue, craving eggs and indigestible things
  • Lachesis – irregular, scanty or excessive bleeding, left-sided ovarian pain, intolerance of tight clothing
  • Apis mellifica – ovarian cysts with stinging pain, swelling, tenderness

(A proper case-taking by a homeopathic doctor decides the exact remedy.)

Precautions & Lifestyle

  • Maintain healthy weight – even 5–10% weight loss improves cycles and fertility
  • Balanced diet – avoid refined carbs and sugar; prefer whole grains, green vegetables, proteins, and good fats
  • Regular exercise – yoga, walking, strength training improve insulin sensitivity
  • Stress management – meditation, adequate sleep, relaxation techniques
  • Avoid hormonal self-medication – homeopathy works gently without suppressing natural cycles
  • Regular monitoring – track periods, sugar levels, and hormonal changes

With proper homeopathic treatment and lifestyle correction, many women with PCOS notice regularized periods, improved skin and hair, weight balance, and better fertility chances.
