Amenorrhea
What is Amenorrhea
Amenorrhea means absence of menstrual periods in women of reproductive age.
- If a girl has not started her periods by age 15–16, it is called Primary Amenorrhea.
- If a woman who previously had normal cycles stops getting periods for 3 months or more, it is called Secondary Amenorrhea.
Amenorrhea is not a disease by itself — it is a sign that something in the body’s hormonal, structural, or reproductive system is out of balance.
Causes
Primary Amenorrhea (never had periods):
- Genetic or chromosomal problems (like Turner’s syndrome)
- Hormonal imbalance (thyroid, pituitary issues)
- Structural problems in uterus, ovaries, or vagina
- Very delayed puberty
Secondary Amenorrhea (periods stopped after starting):
- Pregnancy (most common cause)
- Stress, sudden weight loss, excessive exercise
- Hormonal disorders (PCOS, thyroid disease, prolactin imbalance)
- Certain medicines (contraceptives, psychiatric medicines)
- Menopause (natural or early)
Symptoms
- Absence of periods (main sign)
- Breast tenderness, nausea (if pregnancy-related)
- Weight changes, acne, or unwanted hair (if PCOS or hormonal imbalance)
- Hot flashes, night sweats (if menopause-related)
- Headache, vision problems (if pituitary gland issues)
- Pelvic pain or bloating (if structural problem like cysts or fibroids)
Homeopathic Perspective
In homeopathy, Amenorrhea is considered a result of constitutional imbalance, often triggered by stress, emotions, hormonal disturbances, or overall weakness. Homeopathy works by stimulating the body’s own healing power and restoring natural menstrual cycles.
Commonly considered remedies (based on symptoms):
- Pulsatilla – most commonly used; for delayed or absent periods, mild and emotional nature, changeable moods, periods may come late and be scanty, often in young girls
- Sepia – for women with irregular or absent periods, hormonal imbalance, irritability, indifference towards family, bearing-down sensation in pelvis
- Calcarea carbonica – for overweight, chilly women with delayed menses, easy sweating, weakness, anxiety about health
- Ferrum metallicum – for weak, anemic women, pale face, absence of periods with fatigue
- Natrum muriaticum – for women with suppressed grief or emotional trauma leading to absent periods
(Medicine must be chosen only after a full constitutional case-taking by a qualified homeopath.)
Precautions & Lifestyle
- Check for pregnancy first if periods suddenly stop
- Maintain healthy weight – avoid sudden crash diets or excessive exercise
- Balanced diet – include iron, calcium, and vitamin-rich foods
- Stress management – yoga, meditation, breathing exercises
- Regular sleep pattern – hormonal balance improves with proper rest
- Avoid self-medication with hormonal pills, as they may cause further imbalance
- Consult a gynecologist/homeopath if periods are absent for more than 3 months (excluding pregnancy)
With proper homeopathic treatment, many cases of amenorrhea due to functional or hormonal imbalance can be managed successfully. Structural or serious causes need combined medical attention, but homeopathy plays a supportive role in overall balance and menstrual health.
