Skin Cancer

What is Skin Cancer

Skin cancer happens when the skin cells grow abnormally and uncontrollably. It usually develops on skin areas exposed to the sun (face, arms, neck, scalp), but it can also occur on covered areas.
It is the most common type of cancer worldwide, but also one of the most preventable and treatable if caught early.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Excessive sun exposure (UV rays).
  • Frequent tanning / sunburns (especially in fair-skinned people).
  • Weakened immunity (HIV, transplant patients).
  • Family history of skin cancer.
  • Exposure to harmful chemicals (arsenic, industrial chemicals).
  • Radiation exposure.
  • Chronic skin injury or burns (non-healing wounds).

Types of Skin Cancer

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC):

  • Most common, least dangerous.
  • Appears as a shiny bump, pearly nodule, or sore that doesn’t heal.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC):

  • Can spread if untreated.
  • Looks like a red, scaly patch, wart-like growth, or ulcer.

3.   Melanoma:

  • Most dangerous, can spread rapidly.
  • Begins in pigment-producing cells (melanocytes).
  • Often starts as a dark mole that changes in size, shape, or color.

Symptoms

Use the ABCDE rule for suspicious moles:

  • A – Asymmetry (one half doesn’t match the other).
  • B – Border (irregular, jagged).
  • C – Color (different shades, black, brown, red, white, or blue).
  • D – Diameter (larger than 6mm, like a pencil eraser).
  • E – Evolving (changing in size, color, or shape).

Other signs:

  • A sore that doesn’t heal.
  • Bleeding or crusting skin lesions.
  • Persistent itching, pain, or irritation in a spot.

Diagnosis

  • Skin examination by doctor.
  • Biopsy – sample taken to confirm type.
  • Sometimes imaging if spread is suspected.

Conventional Treatment

  • Surgery (most common) – removal of tumor.
  • Cryotherapy – freezing abnormal cells.
  • Radiation therapy.
  • Chemotherapy / Targeted therapy / Immunotherapy (mainly for melanoma).

Homeopathy Perspective

In homeopathy, skin cancer is considered as a deep-seated miasmatic disorder influenced by suppression of skin eruptions, hereditary tendencies, or chronic constitutional weakness. Treatment is constitutional, meaning remedies are chosen according to the patient’s overall physical and mental picture, not just the skin lesion.

Common Homeopathic Remedies (based on case picture):

  • Arsenicum album – Burning pains, ulcers with unhealthy skin, restless and anxious patients.
  • Condurango – Especially useful in cracks, ulcerated edges, and scirrhous tumors.
  • Cundurango (classical for skin cancer, especially ulcers).
  • Silicea – For unhealthy skin, non-healing ulcers, pus formation, tendency to infections.
  • Calcarea arsenicosa – Chronic, indurated, ulcerated growths.
  • Carcinosinum – For patients with family history of cancer, very sensitive, artistic, anxious.

(Remedies must be individualized by a homeopath after full case-taking.)

Precautions

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, especially midday (10 am – 4 pm).
  • Use natural protective clothing (hats, long sleeves) instead of only depending on chemical sunscreens.
  • Check your skin monthly – any new mole, spot, or wound that doesn’t heal should be shown to a doctor.
  • Do not scratch or irritate suspicious lesions.
  • Maintain good immunity with proper sleep, diet, and exercise.
  • Avoid suppression of skin eruptions with strong local ointments – consult a homeopath instead.
  • Healthy diet – more fresh fruits, vegetables, antioxidants.
  • Reduce alcohol & smoking, as they weaken immunity.

Summary

Skin cancer is very common but highly treatable when caught early. If you notice unusual moles or skin changes, don’t ignore them. Protect your skin from the sun. Conventional treatments remove tumors, while homeopathy focuses on strengthening the body’s inner resistance and treating the disease constitutionally, so that healing is long-term and natural.
