Fatty Liver (General Overview)

What is Fatty Liver

Fatty liver means that more than normal fat (triglycerides) gets stored inside the liver cells. Normally, the liver contains a very small amount of fat (about 5–10%), but when fat crosses this limit, the liver becomes “fatty”.

  • In simple words: The liver starts acting like a storage tank of fat instead of a filter and energy powerhouse.

It is one of the most common liver problems worldwide today, especially with modern lifestyle.

Causes

Fatty liver does not happen overnight. It develops slowly due to many reasons, such as:

  • Overeating and obesity.
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar.
  • High cholesterol / triglycerides.
  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Unhealthy diet (too much junk food, fried/oily food, soft drinks).
  • Lack of exercise (sedentary lifestyle).
  • Crash diets / rapid weight loss.
  • Medicines like steroids, chemotherapy drugs.

Symptoms

Most people with fatty liver may have no symptoms in early stages. That’s why it is often found accidentally during ultrasound.

Some patients may feel:

  • Tiredness and weakness.
  • Pain or heaviness in the upper right side of the abdomen.
  • Indigestion, bloating, acidity.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Mild yellowing of eyes (jaundice) sometimes.
  • Advanced cases: swelling in legs/abdomen, weight loss, confusion (if liver damage worsens).

Complications

If ignored, fatty liver can slowly progress and cause:

  • Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis).
  • Fibrosis (scarring of liver).
  • Cirrhosis (hard and permanently damaged liver).
  • Increased risk of liver cancer.
  • Higher risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopathy looks at fatty liver not just as “fat in the liver” but as a constitutional imbalance of metabolism, digestion, and lifestyle.

Homeopathic treatment aims to:

  • Improve fat metabolism in the liver.
  • Stimulate natural bile flow for digestion.
  • Reduce associated complaints (indigestion, gas, bloating).
  • Correct the patient’s constitution (obesity, diabetes, alcohol craving, weak digestion).
  • Prevent progression to cirrhosis or liver failure.
  • Frequently used Homeopathic Medicines (selected after case study):
  • Chelidonium – liver pain, jaundice, sluggish bile flow.
  • Lycopodium – bloated abdomen, gas, craving sweets, right-sided complaints.
  • Carduus Marianus – liver protector, especially in alcohol-related fatty liver.
  • Phosphorus – fatty degeneration with weakness and bleeding tendency.
  • Nux Vomica – for patients with alcohol excess, spicy food habits, acidity, constipation.

Remedy choice is individualized based on full symptom picture, not only fatty liver.

Precautions (Homeopathic + Lifestyle advice)

Completely avoid alcohol.

  • Eat healthy – less oil, less sugar, avoid junk.
  • Exercise regularly – walking, yoga, light workouts.
  • Keep weight, diabetes, and cholesterol under control.
  • Take small, frequent meals instead of heavy ones.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid unnecessary medicines that strain the liver.
  • Go for regular checkups (ultrasound, liver function test).

In Short (Patient-Friendly):

Fatty liver means your liver is storing too much fat and becomes sluggish. At first, it may not cause big problems, but if ignored, it can lead to liver damage.

With homeopathy + lifestyle changes, the liver can be made healthy again, fat reduced, and future damage prevented.
